Where you have a Y coming off of your exhaust somewhere (usually after cats) and when you take a plate off of the Y (with wing-nuts, via a switch/butterfly valve), the exhaust is allowed to go straight out, rather than through the rest of your exhaust system.

Hang on. I can't have straights. I know because when the "muffler" fell off once, the car got quieter, so i think it's just a resonator. Sorry about that.
